Autool X50 OBD2 Monitor and diagnostic Display

by GFR2

Now I know I already had an OBD2 display which worked well but being the perfectionist I am it lacked a couple of minor things, was a little on the large size and was awkward to install so was visible without being in the way or looking ugly.

This is quite a different footprint and is only a couple of inchs in size, but its much easier to read and use, part of this is the larger square coloured screen.

Functionality wise it offers more than the TurboGauge including speed tests and brake tests (eg 0-100kmh and 100kmh-0)and colour selection in addition to the normal features of guages and fault code reading/clearing.

But for me the real grab was the screen layout as shown in the picture above, I have the large portion showing speed in km/h, even though this shows on my dash its very hard to see in anything other than at night when the lights are on.  Beneath that I have air intake temperature and water temperature and finally at the bottom I have rpm.

The screen is bright and clear and easy to read whilst on the move, its also easier to setup than the Turbogauge and has a simple menu system all controlled via a little dial at the bottom, left or right flick of the switch and press to confirm or press and hold to exit.

The top reading can be swapped by selecting left or right on the dial and has a variety of useful (albeit basic) gauges.

The unit has a small USB port on the rear which connects to the standard ODB2 port Via the supplied cable, installation is easy and done and setup within minutes.

There is a negative point though, the ebay listing stated it displayed either km/h or mph and this was user selectable – this is not the case, the version I have is km/h only but as I did purchase it to display km/h its not too bad (although it would be nice to show mph).

Its been running for a few weeks and works well so far and for £40 delivered its does the job I want, it isn’t the easiest thing to source in the UK and I had this shipped over from Germany.

Amazon now stock this item for £31 (free delivery if you are on prime) – click here

The manual for the x50

Update – 29/09/2016

Still going strong, all the values it shows have been compared to my other OBD2 monitor and OBD2 reader (and gps speed for speed readings) and I’m happy to say all numbers agree – interestingly the speed shown on both my OBD monitors matches exactly the speed shown on my various GPS based apps, the speedo however over reads, so when I’m actually doing 70mph the speedo reads 73mph. (GPS and OBD readings match exactly – The X50 in kmh and the Turbogauge in mph)

How about resetting average speed or average fuel consumption ? I can’t find how to do it 😦

I can’t test it as mine isn’t plugged in currently as I’m testing the TomTom Curfer but what happens if you scroll to the display and then press and hold the middle button?

Nothing happens. Tried everything. The only way is ro reset all settings and set everything again 😦

Not a great way to reset – I will say this is something the full blown ScanGauge II will do and does well, in the UK though its nearly 3 times the price of the X50.

I found a way 😀 If you unplug the device for a while it resets without deleting the settings.

O have two of these on two cars: Mazdas MX5 and CX5. In both cars the X50 plus causes occasional crashes of the diagnostic system such that all warning lights com on on the car dash. The cruise control trips off, and I do not no what other things have been affected: ABS perhaps?
I then must stop and clear the fault codes using another OBD II tool, and all is well again – until it all happens again a short while later (usually less than one hour). This is extremely annoying and as a result I have been unable to use either X50 plus n either car. Very Disappointed!!!

I’ve read this on a couple of reviews on Amazon and I know a couple of people have contacted the seller who has provided them with some instructions for disconnecting/swapping a wire around which has resolved this – might be worth looking into.

Thanks. Can anyone provide me with the details of this mod?
